Few days ago there was a rumor to say that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be delayed to the spring of 2011. Now, unfotunately, the rumor has been confirmed in SWTOR's official forum. It's really a little bit disappointed to see the fact that there is still a year ahead.

Today's update to the Star Wars: The Old Republic site is Master Gnost-Dural's sixth timeline holorecord, Onslaught of the Sith Empire. The video "tells the story of the Sith Empire’s surprise attack at the start of the Great War over 28 years before the Sacking of Coruscant."

You can read the full description of the video after the jump. If you've missed any of the entries, you can watch all of the timeline holorecord entries on the official site.

BTC 28 – Centuries after being driven into exile, the Sith Empire returned from deep space to launch the most calculated military assault in Republic history. Strategically revealing its attack in a menacing manner, the Sith struck fear into the hearts of the Republic’s defenders even while orchestrating surprise attacks at carefully targeted locations across the galaxy. When the Republic fleet rushed to respond, they discovered the Sith had established puppet governments on several planets in the Outer Rim. Surrounded by enemies and traitors, the Republic fleet was forced to scatter, allowing the Sith Empire to sweep through most of the Outer Rim without further challenge. The Empire’s initial victories put the Republic at a disadvantage for the duration of the Great War.

    Today, SWTOR's
community manager, Sean Dahlberg told us a good news: there will be space
    combat
in addition to ground-based combat in SWTOR. He didn't tell
more, but the October 2010 edition of PC Gamer magazine will tell us
more details. On August 17th you can buy the magazine and get access to
the screenshots and an exclusive interview about that. Be ready!
If you've been following the news coming out of the Star
Wars: The Old Republic panel at Comic-Con International, you've heard
the announcement that we will indeed have Space Combat as part of the
TOR experience! But what does that mean? Space combat is an alternative
gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and
ground-based combat. In space combat, you fly your personal ship to
various "hot spots" on your galaxy map. From there, you will blast your
way through asteroid fields, enemy fighters, frigates, destroyers, and a
variety of other obstacles that will evoke memories of some of the
    great Star Wars space battles.

Post by Shu Sun Sep 05, 2010 4:30 am

BioWare has put up a new section at the official Star Wars: The Old Republic site, detailing a little more about space combat.

As we saw in the preview trailer, space combat looks set to be relatively linear in nature. Kind of like the Death Star trench assault level on those old Atari arcade conversions.
The page itself states: "You'll be put on a direct course towards your
objective and you'll maneuver your ship through obstacles and deal with
    enemies," which sounds pretty arcade-style.
Space combat will be worth pursuing though, as "By succeeding in
these missions, you'll obtain rewards that will be useful in other
    aspects of the gameplay experience."

Star Wars the Old Republic(2011 Spring Release) - Page 2 187207
BioWare has posted two updates on the Star Wars: The Old Republic
site today: a Fan Friday segment and a Studio Insider article that
contains a developer Q&A and an in-depth look at the creation of
    the X70B-Phantom starship.
    The Studio Insider
article contains the meat of today's update. Senior Concept Artist Ryan
Dening and Senior Environment Artist Christopher Reeves provides a ton
of detail on how an in-game ship is created, and the Q&A with Senior
Producer Blaine Christine answers some interesting questions that were
submitted by fans on the official forums. You can read the full Q&A
    after the jump.
As always, the Fan Friday segment
contains fan art, fan fiction, forum avatars and concept art. The most
noteworthy portion is the announcement that Star Wars: The Old Republic
will be present at PAX East this year. The convention will be held from March 11-13 in Boston, Massachusetts.

    Community Q&A

We took some of your questions from the last Community Q&A thread
to Senior Producer Blaine Christine to get answers, and here they are!
Q: How diverse can I expect the enemies to be? (asked by mattjorgdbb)
A: Our Design team and Artists have been putting a lot of time and
    effort into ensuring that each world has a very distinct look and feel;
even specific areas within each world receive this attention. A big
part of this is the diversity of the enemies you will encounter as
players. We’re confident that as you move through the game, you will be
pleased with the progression of enemies – not only from a visual
standpoint, but also in the variety of attacks and challenges that they
    offer.
Q: Will players of one allegiance be able to visit the opposite allegiance’s planets? (asked by DarkLots)
A: There are certain planets within the galaxy that are only
available to one allegiance or the other, but the majority of planets
are open to the Republic and the Empire, allowing opportunities to -
ahem - ‘encounter’ the other side should you so desire.
Q: Will there be specific quests and/or chains within the class quests for Advanced Classes? (asked by ROFLBATLECOPTER)
Advanced Classes do not have a direct impact on quests or storyline. They obviously have a huge
impact on your character’s progression and abilities in addition to the
weapons and armor you are allowed to use. Rest assured that, this
being a BioWare game, there will be plenty of opportunities to make
significant and impactful decisions throughout the course of each Class
story. So much so that I suspect many of you will want to play
    individual classes more than once.
Q: What will BW/EA do in combating cheating in-game with the use of Bots/hacking? (asked by Draigon)
    A: Everything within our power.
Q: Is the Trooper armor progression gonna be awesome? (asked by valkyor)
A: Oh, YES! As someone who has had the privilege of seeing the armor
progression for each class in the game, I can say without hesitation
that you will be blown away by the high level goodies for all of the
classes. LucasArts has been great at allowing us to really push the
envelope here to make sure that the players that put in significant
effort will be amply rewarded. I can’t wait to see the diversity of
characters in the game after we have a full server that is live for a
while. But as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words…

Star Wars the Old Republic(2011 Spring Release) - Page 2 187211
Q: Can you miss acquiring a companion without realizing it during the game? (asked by DarthPrecious)
A: Generally speaking, these opportunities are all pretty obvious to
the player, as they occur along the main path of your Class Quests. We
do, however, reserve the right to put some goodies out there for the
    particularly ambitious player to find.
Q: Will characters from Knights of the Old Republic be
mentioned and will events from Knights of the Old Republic II have an
impact on the game? (asked by Forcemachine)

A: All I can say for the KOTOR and KOTOR II fans out there is you
will not be disappointed. The Old Republic has been written from Day One
of development with the idea that it was a true sequel to the original
Knights of the Old Republic games. For folks that have not played
those games, you will certainly feel right at home as well, but to get
the full backstory we do encourage players to play KOTOR I and II. Or
maybe at least read the Wookieepedia entries!
Q: Will we be able to queue an entire group for Warzones? (asked by kbrury)
A: Yes! You can queue solo or in an existing group and our dynamic
matchmaking system will do its best to find suitable opponents
    accordingly.
Q: Will you be able to receive special quests via conversations with your companions? (asked by twistern)
A: Yes; as in previous BioWare games, Companion Characters do indeed
have quests of their own. Completing these quests can result in
changes to the affection level of that Companion and can uncover
rewards for both you and your party that may not be found anywhere else
in the game. Each companion also has a distinct personality as they
interact with you and other characters you encounter throughout your
personal Star Wars saga. We have some great personalities that have been designed and written for The Old Republic!

Star Wars the Old Republic(2011 Spring Release) - Page 2 188021

Is Star Wars: The Old Republic scheduled to launch in September? According to MCV,
"development sources" have targeted that month for the worldwide
release of the game. This is currently only a rumor, so don't mark it on
    your calendar just yet.

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello and former Community Manager Sean Dahlberg said a year ago that BioWare was targeting a spring 2011 release for the game. EA CFO Eric Brown stated last month that the MMO should launch sometime in the company's 2012 fiscal year, which begins in April 2011.

September does fall in Brown's release
window, so we'll just have to wait and see when players will actually
get their hands on Star Wars: The Old Republic.

The latest update to the Star Wars: The Old Republic site give players a look at Flashpoints,
which are instanced adventures for a group of characters. Players will
need to make decisions that determine the enemies you'll face and the
outcome of the story. Flashpoints will also contain some epic rewards,
much like various dungeons and instances in other MMOs.

The update gives players a first look at
the Taral V Flashpoint, which requires Republic players to liberate a
Jedi prisoner from the Imperials. GameSpot
talked with World designer Jesse Sky to learn more about Taral V. Sky
said that the Flashpoint is for levels 32+ and is balanced for a group
of four players. It can be completed in roughly 90 minutes, which is the
    average length of a Flashpoint.

Check out the Taral V preview video after the jump and head over to the Flashpoints page for details on other Flashpoints in the game.

Star Wars the Old Republic(2011 Spring Release) - Page 2 Empty Re: Star Wars the Old Republic(2011 Spring Release)

Post by Shu Thu Feb 24, 2011 6:22 am

Despite being the triple AAA MMO from beloved RPG developer Bioware,
Star Wars: The Old Republic Is still a work-in-progress. The game is
still in development people, and I think with all the hype surrounding
it fans are certainly scrutinizing every bit they see of the game
probably more than any other MMO I’ve seen followed throughout
    development.

Whether you’ve personally been doing this or not
(I’ve even been guilty of it), a lot of fans (and even press) following
the game have been overly critical about various aesthetic aspects of
the game, such as the UI or specific elements of the UI. Bioware has
responded numerous times by stating that the UI seen is placeholder, and
I think a lot of us kind of forget that when they show the game in
public there are still many elements that are not final as a result of
the way most development processes work.
Star Wars the Old Republic(2011 Spring Release) - Page 2 SithPureblood1_t
Bioware’s Georg Zoeller took the official SW:TOR forums last week
to explain the “rough in, refine later” process they (and likely most
developers) utilize when creating their games. The gist of it is this,
development is an iterative process, and in order to get a number of
things working they need to use placeholder animation, UI, sounds, etc.
so that they can get the game actually running. The “refined” versions
of these elements are put in much later. Georg used movement animations
as one example:“For example, you need a movement animation in the game as a prerequisite for pretty much anything else involving a character.

    These
kind of high-dependency assets get roughed in or prototyped as quickly
as possible early on to minimize bottlenecks - e.g. once you have basic
character movement, you can start doing more specialized work. If you
don't, you can't start on that, so they block the rest of development if
    they're not there.”
Star Wars the Old Republic(2011 Spring Release) - Page 2 JediKnight2_t
    The
complaints aren’t all bad though, it’s just important to keep things in
perspective when voicing your concerns. Most of what you see is
probably not final, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have a
constructive opinion on what you’d actually like to see. Sure, you can
base that off what you think they may or may not be going for with
placeholder stuff, but what I really wanted to get at this week is that
we could all stand to calm down a bit and realize that a lot the stuff
we’re seeing probably won’t be there in the same form at launch.
Whenever they show off the game it is a great opportunity to let your
voice be heard and give Bioware feedback, however, going about it in an
antagonistic way is probably a sure-fire way to ensure your take on
things is ignored.I want to close things out this week by pointing to a video
one of our MMORPG.com community members linked to right here on our
forums. The fan-made video looks back at some of the rougher art we’ve
seen in previous showings of the game and compares it to some of the
later stuff where it is quite obvious that there is a marked
improvement. The video isn’t perfect by any means, but you’d be hard
pressed to say the game isn’t looking better after viewing it.
Star Wars the Old Republic(2011 Spring Release) - Page 2 SWTOR-Trooper3_t
    And
yes, I know at least most of us complain because we care and want the
game to look and play great. My hope is that the next time we feel the
urge to kneejerk react to something we’ve seen in a SW:TOR video or demo
this article might remind a few of you (and even myself) to give pause
and consider that everything is still a work-in-progress.

EA at Morgan Stanley Technology Conference

by Klipto, posted March 1st, 2011 at 4:08 pm

    Electronic
Arts CEO John Riccitiello is currently speaking in San Francisco at
Morgan Stanley's Technology, Media & Telecom conference. Once again,
we're listening in to see if he'll answer or talk about Star Wars:
The Old Republic. Riccitiello already reaffirmed double digit growth
for the upcoming financial year, and reassured investors worried about
the NFL lockup affecting Madden sales.

    The full quote to
the SWTOR question is transcribed after the jump, but Riccitiello once
again stated they are going toe to toe with Blizzard's World of Warcraft and "great money" can be made at the 2 million subscriber level.
    Morgan Stanley: The big game coming out this year is Star Wars;
obviously not this fiscal year but in calendar 2011. Can you talk a
little about your experience developing it... like many MMOs, it seems
to take a little while. What potentially makes this one better than some
    of the others out there?

Riccitiello: We officially created the MMO business with Ultima Online and then Blizzard vastly improved it with a better product in World of Warcraft that realized heights that no one anticipated in this sector. Hat's off to them.

    Great
product, they've done a great job with it. A lot of companies have
attempted to take share. To give some sense of this, there's about 12
million subscribers and rising every year in the western markets for
MMO's like this. World of Warcraft has about half that. And
there is a similar number but measured very differently across Asia. A
lot of these are in game rooms and calling them subscribers requires an
    algorithm and mathematical calculation...

    I don't know how they
do it exactly, but it is a very substantial revenue opportunity. Looking
at the West alone, there has been a number of companies that have
attempted to compete with World of Warcraft, and they've done
so with smaller games that were less well-polished, not as innovative
and were consequently pale shadows in comparison to World of Warcraft. A lot of trials, but not a lot of sustained business.

    We're
building a product with BioWare in Austin... and if you don't have a
history, BioWare is probably the only developer in the world that is an
even-tier to Blizzard in terms of RPGs. The history of BioWare shows
they can go toe to toe. They've beat them many times when they go toe
to toe in the market place. They've shipped multiple 90-rated products
for EA in the short time they've been a part of Electronic Arts.

We're starting with one of the two great developers of RPG's. We're starting with a Star Wars
fiction and we're investing what it takes to make a truly great
product. Now the challenge of course is, how will that do in the
marketplace? We think there's some possibility for challenging WoW for market leadership but that's really not in our calculations.

    We've
described this to investors in the past, we can make some money at
half-a-million subscribers. We can make good money at a million
subscribers; we can make a great deal of money at a million and a half,
two-million or more subscribers. I can't tell you that I know precisely
how all this is going to come out. What I would say though, in terms
of market dynamics is, if you imagine a 12 million subscriber market in
the West, in which WoW has half of it, that is growing in a
low, mid, high-single digits, depending on what gets included, but call
    it mid-single digits.

We can probably get a million without
really affecting them very much at all. And, getting beyond that, we
have to start trading blows. I think we've got the product to trade
blows. I was playing it this weekend, it works great. Now the issue is
finaling it, getting it out in the marketplace, and letting the
    consumer decide.

reasonable to infer that it's not in our Q1 guidance. We gave Q1 Fiscal
11, Fiscal 12 non gap revenue guidance, minus 39 minus 44 cents and I
think it's not unreasonable to infer that it's not included in that 90
    day period."

This indicates that the game most likely won't release before the 1st of July.

    Brown
also talks about moving from a closed beta, to a semi-closed beta and
then eventually to an open beta and then says that EA will talk more
about Star Wars at E3, which takes place June 7-9th. Working
transcription follows after the jump. We will be adding more as it comes
    in.

    Quote:
    Question:
Turning to Star Wars, obviously very big opportunity for EA and Lucas
in the not too distance on future. The game appears to be on track at
this point. But can you talk about, where we might expect an open beta,
what that involves in terms of time, investment and to then gauge you
know, perhaps more specific launch timing and then a follow up to that.
What sort of gives you the confidence, that the subscription MMO model
is still relevant, given this massive diversion of content on these
    other platforms?

Eirc Brown: Sure I'll just address timing first
and then you know speak to opportunities. So we have for the first time
street dated within a date range the Star Wars MMO. So we said it's
going to launch sometime in calendar, but not within Fiscal 11. So that
basically pens down between you know, April 1st and December 31st of
this calendar year. It's also reasonable to infer that it's not in our
Q1 guidance. We gave Q1 Fiscal 11, Fiscal 12 non gap revenue guidance,
minus 39 minus 44 cents and I think it's not unreasonable to infer that
it's not included in that 90 day period. So we've narrowed the window,
provided a window for the first time provided on the progress we've made
closed beta testing. The next phase will be to expand the beta testing.
Up until now it's been kind of the EA friends and family kind of testing
program. We need to expand the testing universe to make it more open
scalability, back-end systems, etc. Figure out concurrency etc. Where
there are choke points on different maps etc., tune it accordingly. We
will be increasing the beta. The business is that we have over a
million, closer to one and a half million, opted in happy to step up and
be beta testers. North of a million demand to do some free testing, I
think is a great indicator of the interest level of the franchise. We
haven't given specifics as to milestones, but we will move from closed,
to semi-closed, to open in preparation for launch. We'll talk more about
Star Wars at the coming E3 event.

Question: Is there a typical timeframe open beta or is it such a unique game that it's difficult to?

    Eirc
Brown:: It's hard to say it's typical. There's only one other relevant
data point in terms of this scale of MMO. So it's hard to provide a rule
of thumb. You need months of different flavors of beta testing to
making the product generally available. We're really focused on
providing a great user experience, because not only do we want to
retain, kind of the core tier 1 users. We want word of mouth reference
ability to bring in tiers 2, 3 and 4. In terms of addressable market,
MMO's are a growth segment. If you look at the western worlds, again
North America plus Europe only, we'd estimate there about 12 million
people or so playing one or more MMO's. Roughly half are playing World
of Warcraft. I believe Activision sites about a 6 million western world
subscriber stat. So there's 12 million people to go after, 6 of whom are
playing one game, another 6 of whom are playing some combination of
other games. And then there's an opportunity in Asia, not necessarily
the same RPU characteristics. So we think that's 10-12 million people to
go after, that's a great addressable market right there. Like I said,
we've got well north of a million, million and a half ready to test for
free. We're not that concerned about generating initial demand. For us
it's about creating the right experience, expanded beyond the tier 1 and
the tier 2 users. You've got people that have never played an MMO
before but are interested in Star Wars, to engage and give it a try.
What's really important to us is striking the right balance so that we
serve the needs and demands, requirements of the core, pre-existing MMO
subscribers. They demand a lot of content, a lot of community, guilds
are very important, special group activities, raids and things like that
are real important inside an MMO. But then at the same time we want to
make it accessible, so someone can pick it up and play it for the first
time, recognize the Star Wars fiction, build a character and get into
the game without feeling overwhelmed or intimidated by the hardcore
experienced MMO player. If we're successful in doing that, our
addressable market is well beyond 12 million people, you know current
MMO players and the western market expands into more of a general gamer
population. Basically anyone that has certain minimum spec personal
computer. That's a very large potential addressable market. We look at
it as a tiered opportunity but starting with an addressable market of at
    least 12 million.

Question: Extending that market is assuming
that the monthly subscription model could also be extended to a broader
audience or are there other potential modifications?

    Eirc
Brown:: We've talked about going in with a traditional subscription
model, which is, requires the purchase of a game client, a PC game
client. That's the going in assumption. But we have no ruled out, in
terms of intent or design future micro-transactions because some
interesting opportunities is there. The key is you know, what do include
in a base monthly fee versus what do you charge extra for? So that
requires some pretty careful decisions making. For now we're focused on
the more traditional monthly subscription model.

well its first fully voice mmo.with starwars storyline and judging from the videos the pve features are pretty impressive.the combat/skill system and animation is quite cool also.not to mention their craft/gathering crew system.all these features at least worth the time testing the game ^^

what left is to test the pvp and minor stuff like environment/movement collusion etc but those will have to wait to test during open beta.close beta will be much harder to get in since there is like 1.5m players signing up for it
