I don't want to brag about it but I believe I'm the most hardcore otaku (anime freak) here.
So, before I can recommend anything to you, what kinds of show r u looking for? Include as much info as you can: genre, sub-genre, animation quality, design quality, voices and music, etc.

aye kawainu is probally the most hardcore otaku here hehe, but there are many of us are big fans, I personally have over 300 dvds in my collection and about 500GB of D/Ld anime(started to get to expensive buying it and ran out of room :P)

As kawainu mentioned do you have any particular interest? like:

Fantasy/adventure (magic, swords, demonic, dragon s, ninjas etc)
    Sci Fi (space,mutants,cyborgs,crazy stuff)
    Mecha (big robots)
    hentai (very adult)
    romantic
    cars
    sporty
    comedy

most of the genres have multiple mixed themes.

And lastly would you prefer Movie length anime (everything in one normal regular movie)
Or anime series which can range anything from 5-500 episodes^^

Some good classic anime movies I'd recommend (they are old might be hard to watch)
    Ghost in the Shell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNtgA5Xfd2s
    Akira https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQnw35kR6Pw
    Wicked City https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jTZ3QMoE9w
    Ninja Scroll. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9O6_N4mQBos

Some series that i liked were
    Berserk (medieval fantasy)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGMOS3YDCSE

Fairy Tail (fantasy/comedy, magic guilds like an MMO)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWm61vkDkNg

Gundam - Seed (Gundam is a giant Mecha war with opposing factions)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdbDYwWdbrw
    Gundam -Destiny
    Gundam 00

    Naruto (ninja fantasy/comedy)
    Naruto Shippuden
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_fqZ6gwba0

    Initial D (Car drifting anime)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3D4x6-8PIq4

High School of the Dead (Zombies killing evryone cant go wrong here!!)
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZfbEf9Vhgw

Theres actually so much anime hard to know where to start :P

Also is the movie Princess Mononoke any good ?

For mecha anime, some of the must watch are Evangelion (u must watch "the end of evangelion" movie after watching the tv show) and Code geass (2 seasons). Those 2 are mecha shows but their sub genres are different so I suggest u to watch both of them.
For fantasy, Slayers (all seasons here) .hack/sign and .hack/GU (GU has a sequel movie).
As for the "Princess mononoke" movie I have to warn you it's old so u may not like the animation style and quality. But the story is definitely great and it has a strong ecological message in there.

Well, that's easy to confirm. Just create an account at anime-planet and start adding everything u have watched. Alternatively, u can simply check my profile there (http://www.anime-planet.com/users/kawainu) and then u tell me if u have watched more than me.

Since I'm here I might as well inform u guys (katz, hooli and facade) that creating an anime-planet account is not optional. You must do it or I'll go to ur homes during the night and start throwing anime DVD's at ur door =^.^=

Btw Hooli, congratulations. You are now a few steps away from stepping into the unknown and creepy world of otaku freaks.

If u keep moving forward, u will eventually be recruited to join this RAF Division:

Now I'm gonna show u a few pictures so u mentally prepare urself to survive in the otaku world. After this, nothing is gonna scare or surprise you.
