There were rumors that some company was planning to topple WoW's popularity... a really ridiculous notion. But if an effort was attempted, I think Project 9 might be such a move. A recent web news caught my attention; the lore behind this title is actually really immense - based Louis Cha's Wuxia novels. For those who don't know, this is the Asian equivalent of J R Tolkien's LOTR high fantasy.
Nobody would plan something small based on the copyrights of such material.

The following is taken from mmosite:

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Project901

At the beginning of this year, Gala Networks Europe
has signed an agreement with Snail
    Game
to publish Snail Game's Project 9 in Europe. Players are likely to experience this game
in the near future. Project 9 (Jiu Yin Zhen Jing) is a
MMORPG product which reinterprets traditional Kong-fu culture. With
brand new design method and better graphic expression ability, Snail
Game wants to create a game world which truly interprets Chinese Kong-fu
culture on basis of current game technology. Currently, Project 9 will
be launching its first CBT in China. To allow players
to get more information about it, today we are pleased to reveal an
    important game feature: Life Skill.

There are 11 professions and abundant
    life skills
    in the game.

    Professions:
    Fisherman, Woodman,
Farmer, Miner, Hunter, Blacksmith, Tailor, Goldsmith, Pharmacist,
    Poisoner and Cook.

    Life Skills:

Fishing: In addition to common fish,
shrimp, mussel and crabs, you have a chance to hook up some valuable
items, but you must practice the skill first.

Lumbering: Acquire logs and fruits by
    cutting down trees.

Tailoring: Make a variety of dresses,
pants and other things in the game.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Project_91

    Crafting: Jewelries like rings,
earrings and necklaces are all crafted from precious metals.

Herbalism: Collect various herbs and medical insects.

    Pharmacy: Aside from healing potions,
tonics can also be produced to strengthen physique.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Project_92

Poison Gathering: Collect all sorts of
    poisonous herbs and insects.

Poison Making: Compound and use all
kinds of poisons. Sometimes a subtle poison results in greater effects
    than martial arts.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Project_93

Cooking: Nobody can live without food.
Delicious dishes, soups and snacks from around the country can be made
in the game. Wow, don't you want to feast on them?

but i still hope aika will turn out fine.

but the castle siege mistake that gm refuse to fixed properly will kind of kill any decent competition in own nation.add that with the hacks and bots and spam and it looks pretty bleak atm.

The only game francise that has the fan-base to compete with WoW's fan-base is Final Fantasy.

PWE comes in a close second.

As long as Blizzard keep pushing out content (the new 3.3.5 patch comes with a new Ruby Sanctum Raid), then other game companies do not stand a chance in winning people over.

But people are suckers for the future, they do always look for the next best thing, and if a game company makes a game pretty enough, theirs no doubt people will want to take a look.

Is that the logic of a western game company or a eastern game company?

gPotato EU just released a new English trailer for Age of Wulin, the martial art MMORPG that will hit European market later this year. We presented you the Chinese version before, but we still recommend you to watch this one since there are English introductions inside the video.
gPotato also wants to invite you to the mini site under Age of Wulin website. You can find a good number of stuffs there, including the huge background story
that comprised of 7 chapters. So when will the game come out? There's
no specific date so far. The closed beta for Chinese version has been
pushed to this summer, so it's likely to have some impact to the English
version. Currently, the English version is still scheduled to release
    within 2011.
To learn more about the game, you can head to the game's YouTube, Facebook and Twitter pages.

Well i have to admit that video had some pretty nice hooks to lure people in, like the Skill progression without Levels, but while watching that video i couldn't help but notice the FPS dips when they were rotating the screen.

For all i know it was just bad video decoding during the editing process but Chinese games are steadily becoming notorious for not sporting Optimized game engines and without releasing beta benchmarks for their engines then it's not possible anyway.

I'm about ready to give up on Chinese game developers and their inability to inherit current development techniques and tools, I'm a little tired of these selfish acts of creating game engines from the ground up because they have to much pride to make use of already existing engines that work waaaay better.

shu:this is prob the only chinese made mmo i will be playing for this year ^^
This article is originally from Age of Wulin Chinese official site
    Rumors on Age of Wulin,
which has been developed for 3 years and undergone two big changes, are
spread from time to time. How on earth is the game? Now, Snail Game's
CEO Shi Hai would like to unveil its mystery by walking us through some
    exciting features of the game.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin1
Shi Hai is ready to show you the game he's proud of
The following content was said by Mr. Shi.
We are glad to demonstrate how to play Age of Wulin. First, we
admit that this game is not made for players who are poisoned by rubbish
MMOs, but for those who get a true understanding of games. If you want
to derive true pleasure from games, you are certain to love this game.
On the contrary, if you just go for high numerical values and unskilled
gameplay, I can do nothing. We don't intend to attract medium and
low-end users, who are not our cup of tea. It is known that current
games perform well in graphics, and if we just make some modifications,
perhaps we have released dozens of games. We are quite convinced that
there are some players really understanding Age of Wulin.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin2
    Character creation
Age of Wulin offers 8 sects. 8 novels with over 200 thousand words
respectively are written to describe a character's stories. There are
more than 10 thousand quests, including the main storyline, world
storyline and sect storyline. Furthermore, 80+ social forces, more than
10,000 NPCs and 1,000 main storyline NPCs can be found in the game.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin4
Each character's eyebrows and chin can be customized as players please. Character names can also be randomly generated.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin5
    Choosing a name

Instead of standing still, NPCs can move around and respond to
players' actions. Accepted quests will vary according to the storyline
players choose. Here, I'd like to introduce Age of Wulin's favor and
    hatred system.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin6
    The game starts
With relevant rewards and game content running through, this system
is not simply related to hatred value. NPCs will play an important role
and the system will record what players do in the game.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin7
    The beginning city
No walkthrough will be published, as every player will experience
differently when interacting with NPCs and receiving rewards. You may
fall into a hole, but others won't. Therefore, the best way is to try by
    yourself.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin8
The passerby will glance at you
Employing our self-developed Flexi engine, the game renders wonderful
graphics for sure. Besides, we are optimizing the game all the time.
Since some players complained about our high system requirements, I
tried out the game on a computer which was purchased several years ago,
and it still ran smoothly. The game features a weather system, but the
diurnal variation system is not integrated.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin9

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin21

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin22

The Qinggong system spices up the game, as
well. Players can practice a dozen Qinggong stunts and freely exert them
when necessary. You can shuttle back and forth between big scenes by
use of Qinggong stunts and fly to wherever you can see, like the frontal
statue of a Buddha and the chain bridge. Please be careful, or else you
    will fall and die.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin10
Age of Wulin is characterized by many special scenes, which has taken
developers much time, such as the Thousand-Lamp Town and Tea Forest.
Both of them are really beautiful. We pay much attention to details in
terms of scene production. Mountains and rocks don't repeat each other.
More often than not, you will find inscriptions on stones. In this way, a
    sense of reality is presented.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin11
Age of Wulin doesn't provide healing classes. Players must put palms
together to cure wounds after war. In view of players' operational
habits, the game supports both mouse and keyboard operations.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin12
In other MMOs, Exp will be converted into level and attribute points,
but we don't do that. You will earn corresponding training points by
means of doing whatever things in the game. These training points will
be consumed as time goes by and release energy to your skills.
Consequently, your skills will be enhanced gradually and form various
skill combinations. Only such a setting can conform to the game's
martial-arts style. So far, no games have designed the same mode as
    ours.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin13

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin14

Every character can learn common skills and 3 different moves: Void,
Reality and Stance, which are equivalent to mutually restraining Paper,
Stone and Scissors. The 3 moves have different starting actions, so
players can judge what move the opponent will assume in advance and then
use reactive moves as well as launch attacks. After playing the game
for a long time, players are able to distinguish the opponent's skills
by observing its starting action, and adopt restrictive moves or dodge
attacks, if only they are familiar with the three moves and react
    quickly enough.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin15
The combat system has introduced the concept of combo, and some
skills can give rise to special effects, like levitating, sinking to the
ground and floating. The three moves Void, Reality and Stance will also
be applied to PVE. Some details are being adjusted right now.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin16
    A character's skill

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin17

I cannot disclose much about the important mall system, but I should
say that it will be very different from the existing one. Moreover, the
business model won't be simply based on time subscription or
micro-transaction. One thing can be confirmed is that we won't collect
fees on equipment socketing and gem enhancement.

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin18
    PvE gameplay

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) Age_of_wulin19
    PvE gameplay
In the hope of bringing a true martial-arts game, we will allow
players to create guilds, which are more realistic in Age of Wulin.
Players can build castles and palaces in line with their own
preferences. Just as the above screenshot shows, the player put up an
inscribed board for its guild. Guild castles also offer many additional
functions and exclusive territories. Our game won't stop even if you are
not online. The offline system will enable you to interact with the
martial-arts world after quitting the game. For example, when you are
offline, you may be reduced to the status of a slave, or complete quests
for others. Thus, you are likely to find your character is doing the
legwork or appear in another place when you log into the game again.
Certainly, some restrictions are set and certain requirements must be
    met in the meantime.

Post by Shu Mon May 16, 2011 2:53 pm

Age of Wulin aka Project 9 (2012) 197136
The producer of the European version of Age of Wulin - Legend of the Nine Scrolls has written a lengthy letter
explaining why the game's launch date has been pushed back to an
unspecified date, and the main point is that it's still in development.
Once developer Snail Game locks down the content in China, the European
localization can start the massive translation process.
For more details, you can read the full letter after the jump.

    Producer's statement

    Dear future Wulins,

    As you may have
noticed by now, the European version of Age of Wulin – Legend of the
Nine Scrolls has had its release date postponed from early this year to
    an unspecified date.

The most obvious question you may ask is:
“Why did you have to postpone the release of the game, and why can’t
you give us a specific date yet?” These are indeed valid questions and I
would like to take the time to address them for you.

    First of
all, it is important to understand that our release schedule depends on
the development progress of the game itself. We cannot release a
product that is still undergoing development and testing at our
    developer.

The reason why Snail Game, the developer, decided
to extend the development timeframe is to allocate the necessary time
and resources to make final adjustments to all aspects of the game.
They aim to provide an even better gameplay experience and to increase
the overall quality of the game even further. While this decision
resulted in a delay for the launch of Age of Wulin – Legend of the Nine
Scrolls, we fully support it, as we believe in offering you, the
players, the highest quality game possible, as opposed to sacrificing
content or quality for a premature release.

    That said, Snail
Game is currently preparing a focus group playtest in China. This means
they will test the game with a group of very lucky players who are
invited to be the first in the world to test Age of Wulin – Legend of
the Nine Scrolls. Upon completion of this playtest, the developers will
be confronted with two possibilities: either the game does fully meet
the expectations of the gamers or it doesn’t. In the unlikely event
that the game falls short of some expectations, another development
phase will take place in order to implement the testers’ feedback and
to ensure that their high quality standards are met.

    If the game
completely satisfies both the developers and their testers, Snail Game
will then proceed to what we call “a content lockdown”. This means: no
further major changes will be made to the gameplay or the storyline
and the Chinese version will enter their Closed Beta Test (CBT) shortly
afterwards. For the European market the content lockdown will enable
us to kick off the localisation process (localisation is the process of
adapting and translating the game to our markets).

    The
localisation of an MMORPG of the size of Age of Wulin – Legend of the
Nine Scrolls represents a huge workload and will therefore take a few
months. While we have no final word count at the moment, we estimate
that we will have to translate about 4 million words per language (to
give you a comparison, most novels have around 100,000 words). To
handle the challenges of such a process we have already put together a
strong and dedicated core team to prepare the localisation, which will
be expanded as soon as we have reached the content lockdown.

    If
you follow our news posts you have also seen our announcement that we
are currently looking for dedicated Community Managers. They will be
responsible for providing you, our community, with regular updates and
information, to make your wait more bearable. Therefore make sure to
check back regularly for new information on the progress of the launch
preparation and details about the game.

    I am in the lucky
position that I already had the chance to play the alpha version during
one of my visits at our developer’s studio in China and was amazed how
polished the game already is. This isn’t only limited to the cinematic
martial-arts style or the dynamic fighting system, but even more
visible in the level of detail and passion in every aspect of the game.
Since I personally dislike when other MMORPGs boast that they have a
huge game world only to then discover that they have repeatedly copied
and pasted the same building or dropped monsters randomly around the
landscape, it gave me chills when I realized the amount of tiny details
that make every house unique and how believable and immersive the
world as a whole is. Therefore I can honestly say that we are as
eagerly awaiting the game as you are and, on a personal level, share
    your impatience.

Professionally, we are looking forward to get
started with the localisation and to prepare everything to bring this
fantastic MMORPG to you. Your support and anticipation of the game will
make us work even harder to give you the best gaming experience
    possible.

With all that being said, we will be able to give you
more accurate and up-to-date information regarding the release date of
Age of Wulin – Legend of the Nine Scrolls in Europe as soon as content
lockdown has been achieved by our developer.

Thank you for your support and your feedback,

Dennis, Producer of Age of Wulin – Legend of the Nine Scrolls

    Age of Wulin
has caught millions of eyes and the game is running an internal test in
China. Although any reveal about the contents in the test is forbidden,
there are some screenshots coming out from the test, and they look
    really amazing.

However, there are doubts arose from the community: does the game
really have such a fantastic graphics? Are these beautiful effects
created by photoshop? There's no official comment yet but according to
Chinese gaming website duowan, they got these pictures from the developer Snail Game. As the developer has confirmed there won't be day/night system in Age of Wulin at launch, there is guess that each map, or each area's time is fixed to morning, noon, or dawn.

The Chinese version is expected to start open beta in this summer,
followed by the European closed beta. Now the publisher Gala Networks
Europe is keeping the community updated by releasing new screenshots
    weekly at the facebook page.
Currently Age of Wulin has confirmed 2 oversea versions: European and
Russian. However, according to Gala Networks, players outside Europe can
also access to the game, just like most of their other games.

Usually, when you want to join a closed beta test you will either
hand in your application to try your luck, or take part in the official
events to win a key. But Chinese players recently found that they need
money more than luck if they want to be in the closed beta of Age of Wulin. The developer Snail Game has packed up 60 thousands of CB keys and will sell them to the customers.

What's more, there are 2 different versions of CB keys: normal
version (about $23 USD) and limited edition (about $38 USD). The normal
version includes a beta key and a $15 USD worth of cash shop card while
the limited edition includes a beta key, a cash shop card, a monthly
access card that for unknown use, and many souvenirs like T-shirt and
iPhone 4 cover. The response in the community is different: some are
blaming Snail Game's greed while some are happy that they can finally
secure a slot without having to rely on luck.

However, Snail Game's practice of selling CB keys means that they are
selling a closed beta version of Age of Wulin which inevitably has
certain numbers of bugs, and it's not a good idea. On the other hand,
the developer running a closed beta because they want the community to
help to test the game and give feedback, not make money. Besides, there
are gamers who question Snail Game's purpose of selling so many beta
keys but only open 2 servers for CB.

The closed beta date for Age of Wulin(CN) hasn't been finally
decided. The game will be shown at this month's ChinaJoy, and we'll
bring you more cover of game in the biggest game convention of China.

There were some words before saying that Age of Wulin will be delayed to 2012. Today, the official statement from gPotato confirmed it. Affected by the Chinese version's delay, Age of Wulin EU won't be released this year.

This is the second time that the game pushes back its release
schedule (the first time was delayed from early 2011 to an unspecified
date). The publisher says that the release schedule of the EU version
entirely depends on Snail Game's schedule to release the game in China.
The Chinese version is expected to "enter CBT after this summer."
However, gPotato looks on the bright side of the delay, as they say that
"having played Age of Wulin for almost 2 weeks, we are confident to say
that the additional development time was worth it as the game now
reaches an matchless level of quality for free-to-play martial arts
    MMOs."

GPotato also sheds some light on the next steps of both the Chinese and Europe version:

In August Snail Game will organize a giant PvP testing session with
over 400 participants. Following this huge battlefield combat, they plan
to start the CBT in China, which for us means that we will then start
translating the game to English, French and German.
Although the game won't be released in 2011, it will attend GamesCom
2011 (August 17 to 21). To get an in-depth look at the game, check out
the ChinaJoy 2011 Age of Wulin coverage here.
