The MMORPG publisher Acclaim Games has been acquired by gaming giant Playdom, it was announced earlier. Acclaim
has a number of MMOs under its belt including Dance Online, 9Dragons
and The Chronicles of Spellborn. The company now joins Playdom's other
recently acquired names such as Merscom, Offbeat Creations and the
developer Three Melons, all big names in Facebook gaming development. It
also invested $5 million USD in Facebook developer MetroGames.
According to techcrunch, 40% of Playdom's 28 million monthly game users are from Facebook, the other 60
Playdom, the
new owner of the once-great Acclaim name, has shut down the majority of previously-supported Acclaim MMOs with immediate effect.
Acclaim's
official site has
been replaced with text declaring that "all Acclaim games will no longer
be in service effective August 26, 2010." These titles included a
number of Western-translated Asian MMOs, such as 9Dragons and The
Chronicles of Spellborn.
The site also notes that 9Dragons players will receive refunds for
any purchases made in the past 30 days and offers instructions to
players wishing to be reimbursed for any unused "Acclaim coins."
